There is a version of your life where nothing is ever hard, and you should be afraid of it.
Not the burnout kind of hard. Not the boss who emails at eleven, the form that makes you enter your date of birth in three separate fields. That difficulty is waste, and if you can delete it you should, and the tools are getting frighteningly good at it. I have no interest in defending the form.
I am here about the other kind. The kind you signed up for.
Two ways to hold a hard thing. You can hold it as a toll: the bad stretch you pay to reach the good stretch on the far side, the mile of gravel before the paved road, the thing you would skip if skipping were on the menu. Or you can hold it as the thing itself, where the difficulty is not the price of the aliveness, it is the aliveness. Same hard thing. Two completely different relationships to it, and most advice you have read assumes the first and never tells you it is choosing.
The toll model is the default, and it eats itself. If every hard thing is a toll, then every hard thing is a problem, and a problem is something you make go away. You automate, you delegate, you buy the thing that does it for you. This is called being efficient, right up until you notice that the efficient life is one where you have removed everything that asks anything of you. You have won. And winning feels, on arrival, like a house with the heating on and nobody in it.
I have watched people arrange this for themselves with real skill. The person who optimised their week down to the gram, every task outsourced or scheduled into a slot, who by any measure they would name made it, and who is, under the good lighting, bored in a way they cannot say out loud, because the story says this is the top and the top is not supposed to feel like a waiting room. The friction was doing something. They removed it as a favour to themselves. It was not a favour.
The instinct that says remove the difficulty is right about tolls and catastrophically wrong about the other kind, and cannot tell them apart, so left alone it removes both. Followed to the end, the arranging instinct delivers you to the exact place you were escaping: a life where nothing is hard, and, for the same reason, nothing means very much. You fled difficulty and arrived at deadness, which was difficulty's job to keep away from you the whole time.
You already know this in your body, in the one domain where you kept the friction. Ask anyone who lifts. The point was never to move the weight from the floor to overhead. If it were, you would use a forklift, and no one who has trained has once wished for the forklift. The resistance is not in the way of the thing, the resistance is the thing. There is no easy version of getting stronger. There is the version with the weight, and the version where you stayed exactly as you were and called it "efficient."
The writing is the same. The hard conversation is the same. The skill you are bad at on Tuesday and slightly less bad at on Thursday, that will not be hurried and cannot be bought, is the same. In each of them the difficulty is the outcome, and there is no version where you keep the result and skip the part that resisted you.
None of this mattered much until recently, because difficulty used to be compulsory. The world handed you enough hard stuff that opting out was not on offer. That is over. You now have, in a browser tab, a machine whose entire purpose is to arrange things so nothing is hard. Point it at anything with friction and it will smooth the friction, tirelessly and for free, and it will not once ask whether that friction was load you needed. It removes the toll and the point with the same untroubled competence, because it cannot feel the difference.
So the thing that used to be your temperament is now a decision. Whether you enjoy the difficulty used to be a fact about you, fixed at birth. Now it is a choice you make against a tool that would happily make the choice for you, and the people who keep choosing the friction will be doing something the people who let the tool decide cannot do anymore. That is not a moral position. It is closer to a survival one.
Which leaves you one question, and it is a sorting question, not an inspirational one. Take the difficulty in front of you and ask what it is. A toll, or the point. The manual data entry, the broken process, the meeting that could have been three lines: toll. Remove it. That is what the machine is for and it is a gift. But the friction that is building something in you, or is the exact thing you claim to want, the writing, the fitness, the conversation you keep not having: that is the point, and you do not outsource the point, even now that you finally can.
And then the harder move, the one that costs something. Go back through the pile you have been calling tolls and check whether you filed a few of them there on purpose, because "toll" is the word that lets you delete a thing you were only ever avoiding. Relabelled so you could put it down and feel efficient instead of gone. Those are the ones to keep. Not because hard is holy. Because that particular hard was doing something, the machine that would take it off your hands does not know that and will not ask, and the only person who can tell is you.
